Applications open for EMERGE 2026 – Summer School on Electrical Machines and Drives for Green Transportation Systems

Applications are now open for EMERGE 2026, the Summer School dedicated to Electrical Machines and Drives for Green Transportation Systems, which will take place in Modena from 8 to 19 June 2026.

The initiative offers a two-week advanced training programme, combining high-level scientific content with hands-on activities and direct interaction with industry, in one of Europe’s most renowned automotive regions.

Programme structure

The Summer School is divided into two complementary modules. Participants may apply to the entire programme (Module 1 + Module 2) or only to Module 1.

Module 1

“Advances in Electrical Machines and Drives for Green Transportation”
📅 8–12 June 2026

This first module focuses on the theoretical and technological foundations of electrical machines and drives for sustainable transportation systems.
It combines:

  • keynote speeches from leading industry representatives
  • technical lectures by internationally renowned professors
  • seminars and networking activities
  • company visits, social events and cultural excursions

A PhD Poster Session is included, giving Doctoral Candidates the opportunity to present their research projects and exchange technical experiences.
The best three poster presentations will be awarded during the social dinner.

Module 1 includes:

  • 5-day programme
  • lectures and seminars
  • PhD poster session
  • welcome cocktail (Day 1)
  • social dinner and poster awards (Day 3)
  • company visit and cultural excursion (Day 4)
  • lunches and coffee breaks
  • digital proceedings
  • final test for the recognition of 6 ECTS PhD training credits

Module 2

“Applications of Electrical Machines and Drives for Green Transportation”
📅 15–19 June 2026

The second module is application-oriented and focuses on practical training with software tools for the design and control of electrical machines and power electronics.

Module 2 includes:

  • 5-day programme
  • hands-on software training
  • company visit and cultural excursion (Day 3)
  • coffee breaks
  • final assignment-based test for the recognition of 6 ECTS PhD training credits

Target participants and selection

The Summer School is primarily aimed at:

  • PhD students and young researchers
  • Engineers working in the automotive and transportation sector

Applicants are expected to have a strong engineering background, either through doctoral studies or professional experience.
In exceptional cases, applications from highly motivated Master’s degree students may also be considered.

The number of available places is limited.
Priority will be given to applicants who are residents or domiciled in the Emilia-Romagna region, as well as to students enrolled in universities or AFAM institutions within the region.

Scientific and institutional framework

The Summer School is organized in collaboration with the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society – Electrical Machines Technical Committee (EMTC) and IEEE Power Electronics Society – TC Cluster 3 (Power Electronics for Electric Drives, Wireless Power, Transportation and Aerospace).

The initiative is supported by Fondazione Democenter and endorsed by MOST – Centro Nazionale per la Mobilità Sostenibile and Motus-E.
